It was unbelievable that the building was still standing, but I didn’t think it could survive another blast.

We have to get out of here.

I checked on my companions, and caught Tobias’s attention. “Mat, get the bags. We are leaving!”

Tobias stared at me blankly as if to say, “Are you crazy?”, so I pointed at the fire escape at the back of the library.

“Get the bags. Head for the fire escape.”

Noticing the scattered food, I remembered Tabitha, and swept my gaze in search of her.

I found her standing before the permaglass façade of the library that faced westward into the school grounds.

“Tabitha!”

With the railgun cannon in my hands, I rushed over to her, arriving in time to see her shake her head in disbelief.

“What are you doing…?” Tabitha asked as she looked westward.

At first I thought she was asking me, but then I followed her line of sight, and saw that she was staring at the admin building some three hundred meters away.

My view was magnified and enhanced by the visor I was still wearing – despite all the running, jumping, and falling that I’d endured. Thus, it was through the visor that I saw a slender girl standing on the roof of the admin building, flanked by six long cannons mounted to twin armatures extending outwards from her waist.

I swallowed quickly. “What are those cannons?”

“That’s her Arsenal, Conflagration.”

I suddenly recalled what Clarisol had told me back in the admin building. “The Arsenal of a Gun Queen?”

The girl on the rooftop mimed the shape of a gun with her right hand, and aimed it at the library.

“Is she aiming at us?” I asked.

“Sure looks that way.”

The girl made a shooting gesture with her hand, and a moment later the muzzles of the six cannons – three on either side of her – belched emerald fire.

“Oh, pretty lights,” Tabitha remarked.

Six glowing balls of light launched from the cannons and raced through the night sky toward the library.

“Aegis-field max output,” Tabitha commanded laconically.

A heartbeat later, the six shells glowing brightly orange crashed into the emerald barrier.

It was like watching an aurora right outside the library, shimmering and undulating with a mixture of emerald and orange light.

Worryingly, I felt the building tremble despite the barrier protecting the library, as though the Aegis-field wasn’t able to reflect all the energy from the six exploding artillery arounds.

I threw Tabitha an anxious look. “What the Hell is she doing?”

“She’s bombarding us.”

“I can see that? Why the Hell is she bombing us?”

“Let’s ask her.” Tabitha coughed twice into a fist. “Testing. Testing. Princess, can you hear me?”

In reply, the girl on the roof of the admin building made another shooting gesture, and the cannons flanking her flashed emerald an instant before launching six more explosive rounds at the library.

The Aegis-field weathered the detonations, but it felt as though more of the shockwave penetrated the building than before causing it to shake rather than tremble. From the rear of the library I heard panicked shouts and cries,
